Silverlight will get a DataGrid from Microsoft before WPF does
I was pouring over the Silverlight 2.0 tutorial posted by Scott Guthrie, and noticed this entry which describes the currently unreleased DataGrid for Silverlight (due for a beta1 release at Mix08 in a few weeks presumably). The new beta release will also include a calendar date-picker controls (also noticable omissions from the current default set of WPF controls) as well as integral features from WPF such as data binding, and layout management.
Scott recently also mentioned a DataGrid for WPF (in addition to a number of other improvements) as part of the Client RoadMap, although without any date commitments this looks a bit further out. This is interesting, as it shows Silverlight pulling ahead in some areas of its larger and older sibling WPF. Of course there are a number of 3rd party grids available for WPF, including a free DataGrid from XCeed.

Thanks for this... I saw the Silverlight DataGrid in ScottGu's tutorial as I was in the middle of transforming a WPF ListBox into a would-be DataGrid for an app I was building, and was sitting there thinking "did I miss something?!" :)

This is pretty sad, really. It's like senior Microsoft management thinks WPF was a big expensive mistake and they're starting over with Silverlight. Once they flip the RunOffline bit on Silverlight, people will seriously think twice about using "WPF Classic" for any new development. :(

Oran: I think you misunderstand how Silverlight is placed. Check Scott's last tutorial where he recompiles his Silverlight app into WPF.
Development in Silverlight and WPF isn't mutually exclusive, one benefits the other. It really is the first time that the primary native GUI platform for a major OS has also been supported across other platforms.

I agree, Silverlight cross-platform support is amazing, and there is a nice upgrade path to WPF. But if you look at the WPF-to-Silverlight ratio of blogging energy from folks like Scott who is responsible for both, as well as the ratio of investment in new features, it's very clear that WPF isn't getting even 20% of the attention Silverlight is getting, both inside Microsoft and outside.
I really do think if Silverlight nails 80% of the most commonly used features of WPF and they flip the RunOffline bit, WPF will be seriously marginalized in real-world apps. And that's just Silverlight 2.0. With WPF Classic sitting still and all the resources being poured into Silverlight, what will the situation look like when they release Silverlight 3.0? Unless they change their focus and reinvest in WPF, Silverlight 3.0 could very well surpass WPF for most rich client scenarios.

Joe: WPF is the "primary native GUI platform" for Windows? I don't think so. Not yet. WPF could be scrapped tomorrow and most Windows apps and developers wouldn't be affected. Compare with, say, Win32.
But I agree with your other point. WPF developers should be thankful Silverlight is getting the attention it is. If developers get started with Silverlight and jump into WPF from there, maybe WPF could get the attention it needs (from inside and outside MS) to really become successful.

I thought silverlight was a subset of .net meaning it will not have all things that are in dot net?
How about the WatermarkTextBox where is that in WPF?
Is there a chart or something to let use know what will be in what version and which one might come before another? will SilverLight stuff come before WPF or visa versa or released at the same time?
How does this help wih code reuse? what or how would i reuse a XAMl view layer for SilverLight and WPF client application? or would there need to be multiple views or views built based on a common factors between the two options SilverLight or WPF?

SL has all the media hype. (the web sells) But when folks get the concept of an XBAP, it's WPF all the way. .net will port to Linux and Mac. (mono, Novell, etc.) WPF is a huge leap in UI API.
